How I Met Brad: Stories
Brad's brain has been through hell, and now we are re-building it. Picture a hurricane, on top of an earthquake, on top of a tornado to visualize what happened after a brain bleed followed by brain surgery followed by brain swelling. One of the hardest hit areas of his brain is his language storage unit. We are reconstructing his verbal vortex one word at a time. Of all the words, names of people are among the most important. His visual vortex is all still intact, so one of the best ways to teach him words is to show him a photo or depiction of the object whose name you want him to remember.
If he receives a greeting card in the mail, signed by his old buddy Marven Fenstemmer, we can show him the card and say: "Marvin Fenstemmer sent you this card." This has no meaning for him, no matter how much he used to adore Marvin or how long they've known each other. If there's a picture enclosed in the card, we can show him the photo and say, "Marvin sent you this card and here is his picture" and this is much more effective. If he receives a greeting card that has a photo PLUS a description of who the person is, that is best of all, because now we can say, "Here is a card Marvin Fenstemmer sent you; here is his photo; and he says he served on a hacking team with you in Vegas last year and you came in second place, losing to the top-placing Hackers from Hell, and that you celebrated your win with dinner and drinks at the Lucky Duck all-you-can-eat buffet, where you had a competition to see who could eat the most crab legs." Now he is able to make valuable connections, hooking his verbal vortex up to his cache of memories, and pinning the name Marvin Fenstemmer permanently down in place: "Oh yeah! NOW I remember!"
For this reason we are asking friends of Brad to send in photos of themselves, as well as pictures of any places or events that would trigger memories and help us rebuild pathways in his head. We would like this page of the website to be Brad's Bulletin Board where friends thumbtack their memories and describe their connection to Brad and Nina. If you took a class from him, if he rescued your computer, if he taught you CPR, if you attended his seminar -- send us a photo of yourself and tell the story of how you know Brad.
